Class Visits

I am available to do talks or workshops in schools anywhere in West Africa. I enjoy leading interactive sessions with students of all ages.

I am equally happy to discuss travel writing. I have published travel features in many newspapers and magazines including the Sunday Times, the Guardian Weekly and Africa Geographic. This talk divulges the ten secrets of good travel writing: how to communicate the essence of a place or journey.

"Stephen came to talk to Year 4 about his life in Burkina Faso, which is the source of inspiration for his books. Year 4 were enthralled, learning (amongst other things) how to wind a turban and how to meet and greet in the local language. An inspirational speaker, Stephen held all sixty children in the palm of his hand - not to mention the staff as well."

"My name is Cathy Bliss and I am the librarian at Sahel Academy, an International Christian School in Niamey, Niger. We had the wonderful privilege of having a visit from Stephen Davies this last month. It was perfect timing as I had made my library theme an Adventure Theme! I had known of Stephen Davies as some friends had met him and brought us some of his books several years ago. I was thrilled to find stories set in West Africa as there are so few and Mr Davies knows what he's writing about as he lives in our same setting. Our students loved his books and I wrote to him inviting him to come visit our school and share with us if he was ever in Niamey. When he came and was able to have some time with our students right in the middle of our Adventure Week, it couldn't have been more perfect! We scheduled two sessions with the elementary students and one with the grade 7 English class. He gave a presentation on the important elements of a good adventure story. He had a wonderful way of drawing the students into his presentation and was very creative, leaving everyone with a great picture in their heads that they won't forget and an easy way to remember his points. We had some time for questions as well and our students thoroughly enjoyed asking a real author about his work and life! His visit was a wonderful treat for us as there aren't many real authors who would take the time to come to our little school. It was also fun for him I think as our students could relate well to his book characters and the setting of his books since we live here in West Africa. I would thoroughly recommend his books and if anyone would have the chance to have him visit their school, he made a huge impact in just a short time! Thank you Steve!"
