Fulani fishermen
I’m increasingly aware that I need to work myself out of a job.
The task of taking the good news of Christ to the Fulani cannot remain the task of the missionaries alone. We are too few, too expensive, and too culturally removed to do the whole job at all, let alone do it properly. Even though it is early days in the birth of the Fulani church in Burkina, it is essential for the health and relevance of the church that Fulani Christians themselves increasingly take responsibility for the task. Thankfully, in some places, this is beginning to happen.
I have just heard of a conference that took place recently in Burkina to encourage, challenge, and equip Fulani lay workers as well as pastors for ministry to the unreached Muslim Fulani throughout the country. About 30 men and women, mostly themselves Fulani converts, gathered from all over the country for the conference. Sadly, none of the believers from Gorom-Gorom were able to make it, but it seems it was a profitable time for those who did.
As well as teaching and training, there was a time of storytelling, with Fulani telling stories from their culture to present the good news. There was sharing of the Lord’s Supper, using juice and local dough balls. And some were able to return to their ministries with a pack containing a hand-operated cassette player, cassettes and picture books for use in their ministry.
Pray for these men and women to grow in the anointing God is giving them for his work, and to become increasingly effective for his kingdom. Ask the Lord to show us how we can better serve them, and how we may together be good co-workers for the glory of God.
