The locust swarm

You have probably heard of the locust swarm that has swept through West Africa. The latest report from Burkina is that 90% of the harvest from the north of the country has been lost – first because of bad rains, and then because of the locusts.

Here are some quotes from friends in the area:

“They came twice. Giant, colourful, swarms--clouds!-- of bugs came and ate everything off of the millet stalks. The first time they came through, I think they were in a hurry to get out east. But a couple of days later they came back through and cleaned up everything they hadn't gotten before. It was a depressing couple of days…”

“The famine this year looks like it will be about as bad as it gets. People in Djibo are already getting skinny and they have nothing to eat.”

“In Djibo during the space of three weeks the grain has gone up from 11,000 per sack to nearly 18000. Boureima did get some grain, probably enough for two meals.”

“We are now hearing of Fulani coming to the capital and the main commercial city by the truck loads. When visiting X we found that they had only harvested enough for 2-3 weeks …. Most of these Fulani have been divested of their livestock because of years of poor harvest. Now they have nothing to sell. Some seek work but a large portion will have to beg to survive.”

Grain price is already double what it normally is at this time of year, with traders profiting from the crisis by importing grain and hiking the price. The UN has been calling for $100m of international aid for months, but response has been slow.

Steve has contacted the World Food Programme, and they are planning to do relief work in the north of Burkina. Their priority is malnourished children, so they are going to be distributing grain primarily to schools and health clinics. Steve will collaborate with them in this, and is fundraising for that purpose.

If you would like to donate to this grain project, 100% of your gift will be used to buy grain for distribution in the north of Burkina Faso. He will buy grain in the south of the country and World Food Programme lorries will transport it up north. We will keep you in touch with exactly what is happening.

Please make cheques payable to World Horizons. Write GRAIN AID on the back of the cheque (so that Margaret in the finance office knows what the cheque is intended for). If you are a UK tax-payer, you are eligible for gift aid - this increases the value of your gift by 28%. Simply enclose a note with your cheque stating that you are a UK tax-payer and that you would like your donation to be gift-aided.

Send to:
Centre for the Nations, North Dock, Llanelli, Wales, United Kingdom SA15 2LF.

Thanks for taking the time to read this appeal.
