Church and Mission.

God is on a mission - to bring his blessing to all nations through his kingdom, inaugurated in Christ. The church is to be both a sign of the kingdom of God on earth, and the mediator of his kingdom to a needy world. What does this mean in reality?

Justice

'Now what does the Lord require of you, but to act justly...'

God requires that humans act justly. God is a God of justice. He cares for the poor and weak who suffer the consequences of injustice. The church is to express the justice of his kingdom, but also to be his voice, calling out for justice for the poor, the weak, and the oppressed.

What does this mean for us as we think about issues such as:

  • Third world poverty
  • The environment

    Is missionary work valid for today?

    Criticism is sometimes made of missionaries over the validity of their work. Some of this comment, sadly, has been justified. Other criticism comes from a stereotypical image of missionaries in popular culture that has distorted the reality of what they actually are and do. The two most common criticisms I hear are:

  • It is wrong to convert people of other religions.
  • Missionaries destroy culture.
