Amara Conde carvings
Let me introduce you to a friend of mine - Amara Conde.
Amara is a wood-carver from Guinea, and he works in Ouagadougou with his two younger brothers. Their workshop is opposite the Lycee Technique in Zone du Bois, and they work hard there every day, making beautiful things out of ebony. I have seen a lot of carvings in Burkina Faso, of varying quality, and I think that the Conde brothers are simply the best.
Conde brothers' carvings usually depict animals and people, and their most popular piece is the 'Penseur' - an African version of Rodin's famous Thinker. It would probably look good on the corner of the desk in your study.
Here are a few pictures of Amara Conde's work. Click on a statuette to see a larger image.
If you would like to buy a carving by the Conde brothers, and you have a reasonable command of French, you can deal direct with Amara by email: amara underscore conde at yahoo dot fr
If you would prefer me to act as proxy barterer for you (charging a hefty commission of course), email me at this address: steve at voiceinthedesert dot org dot uk
